How are cars painted? Most of the time we perceive the color of cars for decorative purposes. But, in reality, coatings and color play a vital role in the protection of vehicles. The car’s body looks silver metallic just after the welding. Then there comes the next step which is painting. a car’s color is not just for decorative purposes, it also provides protection from external environmental factors. The perfect paint job is more than the color. No matter whether your car is black, white, orange, or red – The primary function of paint is protection.

Do you know an unpainted car is called white body? – Here is how are cars painted.

Once, all the internal structure and outer body shell are completed then the next process is to paint it. Before painting the car is cleaned properly. A corrosion-resistant layer is applied with the help of dip tanks. Dip tanks are containers holding liquid paint used for coating.

All the process of applying the first corrosion-resistant layer is done with great care. One mistake like a smudge from a human could seriously affect the finish of the product.

Electrostatic Spray Guns

Electrostatic spraying is done with the help of electrostatic aerosol sprayers. This device applies an electrical charge of spray that passes through the nozzle.

Electrostatic spraying has revolutionized the car painting procedure. This method of painting provides full coverage to even hard-to-reach areas.

Paint particles attain a positive charge as they pass through the spray gun. Same charge particles repel each other thus they spread more diversely.

On the other hand, the car’s surface is negatively charged which attracts the paint particles widely. The strong attraction of opposite charges results in an even coating.

Paint spreads evenly and any charge that doesn’t reach the target changes its direction – this way much of the paint is saved from wastage.

Automotive Painting in the Early 1900s

In the early 1900s, cars were painted a little differently than they do today. A varnish-like product was spread over the surface with the help of a paintbrush. Then the surface is sanded and smoothed to give it a finished look.

Thick and even coats of varnish were applied so that the surface protected the car from rust and other environmental factors like harsh weather, moisture, etc. finally, the vehicle was polished to give it a shiny surface.

Would you believe painting a car took nearly 40 days to complete? Well, that’s quite a long paint job.

No doubt, back in those days car painting was a troublesome task. Back in those days, electrostatic spray guns were not introduced. Today, car painting and even colors have evolved much. Painting a car was never so speedy like it is now.

Early 30’s Stoving Enamel

Taking inspiration from the varnishing method of the past, the auto industry introduced stove enamels in the early ’30s. Stove Enamel is a blend of top-quality resins which renders long lasting and quicker effect. Durable pigments and highly selective elements transmit high gloss, extraordinary color retention, and a smooth finish.

Stoving enamel also provides solvent resistance. Before 1940, brushes were used to paint cars. The invention of spray guns totally changed the way cars were painted. Spraying paint through guns provides an even coat throughout the entire surface.

This way the painting was easier and faster and for the finish, less sanding was needed afterward.

General Motors Introduced Car Baking

General Motors Introduced Car Baking

In the 1950s, general motors introduced a totally new trend of baking cars. Doesn’t it sound weird? Well, the experiment didn’t turn out that successful. The company still used spray guns to evenly coat paint throughout the surface.

The only difference was the use of an oven to dry the paint quickly. After painting, the vehicle was sent to a large oven. This method helped quickly dry the car but has one downside. The surface of the car lost its shine during baking.

Come Back of Stoving in the ’60s

Ford Motors found a way to bring back shine. They started using stoving again. Ford reintroduced this method after their keen research on customers’ priority. They noticed that customers didn’t like the dry, unshiny surface. Cars with a lustrous surface are appreciated more by customers.

Firstly, a spray gun filled with acrylic stoving enamels were used to spray paint then the vehicle was baked for durability. Thus, the goal of shine was achieved – shiny color with durability.

Early 1970’s

Two-coat acrylic painting became famous in the 1970s by European and Japanese auto industries. Acrylic paints dry pretty fast, therefore, it is easy to apply a second layer of paint after a few hours of application of the first coat.

However, the technique Americans were using was quite different. Their vehicle industries offered durable and glossy paint jobs. But Japanese and European auto manufacturers were the first to provide the option of metallic hues. Indeed, they were a step ahead of Americans.

Now auto industries have moved to a more advanced technique. Electrocoating is what they are using today.

So, this method involves the use of an electrical current to deposit paint. The vehicle is first immersed into a primer then electricity is used to give final touches to the metal.
